Our Impact Since 2020
Since 2020, PHBC has delivered measurable improvements in maternal and newborn health across our partner health facilities:
° 101,000+ deliveries safely supported
° 93% reduction in maternal deaths in supported health facilities
° 65% reduction in perinatal deaths in supported health facilities
° 1,700+ sick newborns cared for in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), with 99%
survival to discharge
PHBC’s Pillars Program Approach
Unlike conventional NGOs that often operate within fixed 3–5-year grant cycles implement multi-Region programs directed from centralized, PHBC takes a different path. Our approach is long-term, locally rooted, and deeply integrated within the communities we serve.
At the heart of our work is addressing the three critical barriers—the leading drivers of maternal and perinatal deaths in Tanzania:
° Barrier in the decision to seek care
° Barrier in reaching a health facility after the decision is made
° Barrier in receiving timely, quality care at the facility
Together, these barriers form a vicious cycle—one that limits access to skilled care and increases the risk of preventable illness and death for mothers and newborns, especially in rural areas where long distances, poor road conditions during the rainy season, and financial constraints further restrict access to care.
Breaking this cycle requires more than strengthening health facilities—it demands a community-centered health systems approach that begins at the household level and extends to fully equipped, responsive health services.
